FBI Probes Assassination Threat Against Muslim Congresswoman Ilhan Omar

This morning, running in the rain in Sutro Park at the Pacific Ocean, I was thinking that a nut job is lurking in the American swamp waiting to “off” Ilhan Omar.

Shortly thereafter I read the following TPM article. Guess what?? I’m correct and not happy about it, either.

This is the daily toxic menu item of the anti-Muslim perversity of American politics.

Excerpted from TPM 3.5.2019

The FBI is investigating a threat made in graffiti at a Minnesota gas station against Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) last month, according to the local Pioneer Press.

“We are aware of that piece of graffiti at the convenience store and are looking into it with some of our law enforcement partners,” Kevin Smith, the public affairs officer for the FBI Minneapolis Division, told the Pioneer Press Monday. The FBI is involved because Omar is a federal elected official, according to the Pioneer Press.

Last month, “Assassinate Ilhan Omar” was found scrawled in sharpie pen on a bathroom stall at a Holiday gas station in Rogers, Minnesota. The man who discovered the threat took a photo of the graffiti and posted it on social media, after he confronted the gas station attendant about getting rid of it, he told the Pioneer Press.

Vicious Criticism of Ilhan Omar for Stating the Obvious. American Politicians Fanatical Loyalty to Israel

March 4, 2019

It is absolutely disgusting to watch the amount of incendiary anti-Muslim rhetoric being tossed at Rep. Ilhan Omar for stating some obvious truths about what’s acceptable in the American relationship with the State of Israel.

I am Jewish.

I take absolutely no offense

at Ms. Omar’s pointed comments about some of her fellow congress people and their affinity for Israel.

It’s true. Admit it and move on.

America is an openly racist country with a pervasive anti-Muslim bias. The presence of so many Neo-Nazi, fascist and anti-immigrant groups is a historical vein weaving through America’s history. It has been directed towards Blacks, Native Americans, Asians, Muslims, Gays and the LGBT community

The vicious mainstream media attacks on Ms. Omar are disgusting and depressing.

There needs to be some nuanced, dispassionate and fair minded analysis.

Regrettably, it’s not happening.

Following comments are those of the Congresswoman which get to the core of the issue.

“Our democracy is built on debate……I should not be expected to have allegiance/pledge support to a foreign country in order to serve my country in Congress or serve on committee.”

“I have not mischaracterized our relationship with Israel, I have questioned it and that has been clear from my end,” Omar added. “I am told everyday that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel. I find that to be problematic and I am not alone. I just happen to be willing to speak up on it and open myself to attacks.”

German environment minister takes aim at wolves

Animal Cruelty knows no international boundaries.

Excerpted from Deutsche Welle 3.3.2019

Farmers should be allowed to shoot wolves that cause “serious agricultural damage,” Germany’s Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said in an interview. She aims to change the laws that are protecting the predators.

Wolve DW 2.17.2019

Germany’s Greens slammed Schulze’s statements as a far-reaching attack on environmental protection that would pave the way to culling other protected animals.

“Her ‘Lex Wolf’ will soon be followed by a ‘Lex Beaver’ and ‘Lex River Otter,'” Greens representative Steffi Lemke told RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland.

Wolves had become extinct in Germany in the early 20th century and only emigrated back from Poland around the year 2000, thanks to nature conservation efforts. Their population is climbing and currently includes 73 wolf packs of between 3 and 11 animals, according to statistics provided by federal officials. However, Germany’s Federal Office for Environmental Protection said there was not enough data to estimate the predators’ total population. Unofficial estimates vary from several hundred to around 1,000 specimens.

Rent Control. Now The LAW In Oregon

I read an apocalyptic editorial in the Wall Street Journal about Oregon’s Avant Garde Statewide Rent Control law.  I wanted a more nuanced perspective and found the following from Oregon Public Broadcasting. The term Avant Garde usually is used in artistic terms.  Some would say that statewide Rent Control is an experimental art form.

.

Excerpted from OPB, Oregon Public Broadcasting 3.3.2019

Oregon is the first state in the nation with statewide rent control.

Gov. Kate Brown signed Senate Bill 608 into law Thursday. It takes effect immediately.

Brown called the legislation a groundbreaking, bold start.

“(This) will provide immediate relief to Oregonians struggling to keep up with rising rents and a tight rental market, but it doesn’t work on its own,” the governor said. “It’s going to take much more work to ensure that every Oregonian in our communities large and small have access to housing choices.”

The governor has also called on lawmakers to approve a $400 million investment to increase the housing supply. Brown said she wants the money to help address ending homelessness for children and veterans, in particular, and accelerate the growth of the state’s housing stock.

Senate Bill 608 caps how much landlords can raise rent and makes it harder for them to evict tenants without a reason.

Rent control sailed through the Oregon Legislature, which is controlled by Democrats. It’s the first bill signed into law during the 2019 legislative session.

Rent Control 3.3.2019

Under the measure, landlords across the state can raise the rent no more than 7 percent per year, plus the annual change in the consumer price index. The bill carves out an exemption for rental properties that are less than 15 years old. It also limits a landlord’s ability to evict tenants without a reason after they have lived in a property for a year.

Democrats, who dominate both chambers of the Legislature and hold the governor’s office, said passing the bill was a priority and ensured there were no changes made to it as it moved through both chambers.

“This will not solve Oregon’s housing crisis — it is one of the tools in the toolbox,” the governor said. “It’s the first time in the entire country any state has used a tool like this. I think that signifies at least to Oregonians and policymakers this is a critically important issue and it’s important we tackle it.”

The measure would also prevent a landlord’s ability to evict tenants without a reason after they have lived in the building for a year. As long as landlords cite a reason — such as violating the lease agreement or not paying rent — they could still remove tenants from their properties.

There are other carve outs in the bill that allow landlords to evict tenants, such as a need to upgrade their building or plans to demolish it. Landlords could also evict a tenant if a family member is moving in the unit under certain circumstances, but they would need to give tenants 90 days notice.

If a landlord were to violate the terms, they could be on the hook to pay the tenant up to 3 months rent and damages.

Republicans argued the bill was Portland-centric. The issues in their cities and towns is a lack of supply, they said. Conservative lawmakers warned of rural areas of the state being decimated by the measure.

Some tenant right’s groups also argued the cap was too high.

But House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, who was a key lawmaker in ensuring the measure passed, said it would accomplish their main goal: to end the practice of rent gouging.

Chelsea Manning fights Feds grand jury subpoena. Assange real target.

An example of Federal Grand Jury harassment and payback to President Obama for correctly commuting Chelsea Manning’s prison sentence.  Outrageous and terrifying.

Excerpted from Politico 3.2.2019

Lawyers for convicted WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning are asking a federal court to block a grand jury subpoena she received in what her supporters believe is a federal investigation into WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Manning’s supporters said Friday they suspect the effort to question her is retaliation for President Barack Obama’s decision — days before leaving office in 2017 — to commute Manning’s sentence for leaking hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables, military reports, videos and other materials to WikiLeaks.

Manning’s attorneys filed the motion Friday morning in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., a spokesperson for Manning said. The motion was put under seal and no information about it was immediately available from the court clerk’s office.

Julian Assange

In a statement Friday, Manning blasted the process and said she plans to fight the subpoena, which was first reported by The New York Times.

“The grand jury process, mired in secrecy, is troubling. The proceedings take place behind closed doors, without a judge or defense attorney, which makes them susceptible to abuse,” Manning said. “I have nothing to contribute to this case, and I will not endanger myself or the activist communities I’ve organized with since leaving prison. I stand in solidarity with all grand jury resisters, who have refused to participate in this predatory and deceitful practice.”

Obama triggered Manning’s release by reducing the 35-year prison sentence to a few months more than the six years she had already served. Republican lawmakers and some top national security officials opposed the commutation, but White House officials said the president thought the lengthy sentence a military judge issued after a court-martial was disproportionate to those imposed in other leak cases.

Lifting Barbells. An Avant Garde Use of Deepfakes Technology

March 2, 2019

A bizarre and other worldly 21 minute video is available for viewing through May 12, 2019 at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. The artist, Kim Heecheon, created this black and white montage as he struggled to cope with the death of his father.  Kim’s father was killed in a bicycle accident in late 2014.

Lifting Barbells I 3.2.2019

The video is very jarring at times,  a very unsettling piece of art and a visual statement which merits viewing. A close look makes it evident there is the use of Deepfakes technology throughout the film. See http://www.leesperspective.com  1.21.2019 for an analysis of “Deepfakes and the New Disinformation War.”

The film is available for continuous loop viewing on the second floor of the Asian Art Museum.

Jeff Adachi. Asian Art Museum Tribute

March 1, 2019

The San Francisco Asian Art Museum held a tribute on March 1 for Jeff Adachi to commemorate his life as both an advocate for The People and as an accomplished visual artist.

A number of speakers recounted Jeff’s life. The tributes were followed by a showing of his 2017 documentary, “Defender.”  The 80 minute film explores Jeff’s advocacy for people wrongfully accused in the criminal justice system and the plight of immigrant families under the current Trump regime.

Adachi and Mayor Breed 21.8.2019

All the tributes to Jeff come at a time when Mayor London Breed, shown above swearing in Jeff to his latest and sadly last term in office in January is pondering who to choose as a successor.

Should the Mayor choose a “political hack” as the San Francisco Chronicle noted on March 1, it would be a monumental political gaffe. The most qualified person and obvious choice is the current acting Public Defender, Matt Gonzalez. He was named Chief Trial Attorney by Jeff in 2011 and undoubtedly would best carry forward his legacy.

Should Matt not get the nod, it’s a sure bet the dogs will be unleashed to howl their dismay. One of whom sits below in front of the Asian Art Museum.

San Francisco. Executive Coup d’état.

February 28, 2019

I am thinking about this now as I listen to the soundtrack from the German TV series “Babylon Berlin.”

In the story there is an attempted coup in 1929 by disaffected German militarists to overthrow the Weimar government. It fails.

If Matt Gonzalez, pictured below, is not appointed San Francisco’s Public Defender by Mayor London Breed  the result will be a quiet coup d’état by law enforcement and those opposed to Jeff Adachi’s aggressive progressive agenda.

Cith Hall II 2.27.2019

Jeff Adachi just started a four year term.  Jeff and Matt Gonzalez were so closely knit philosophically that if anyone but Matt is selected it will be an open repudiation of the will of the People.

German sniffer dog Luke finds €745,000 in cash

This |Dog, Luke, certainly knows how to earn his room and board.

Deutsche Welle 2.28.2019

If you ever try to smuggle large amounts of cash through the Dusseldorf airport, you will most likely meet Luke, German custom’s money sniffing dog. The canine graduated in December and already made officials proud.

In less than three months of service, German shepherd Luke sniffed out a total of €745,000 ($847,070) while patrolling the Dusseldorf airport in western Germany, German customs agents said in a statement.

Luke DW 2.28.2019

The canine was recruited in February 2018, at two years of age, and then entered a lengthy program teaching him to track down large amounts of cash based on the bills’ scent. He graduated in December and made 12 successful busts before the end of February.

“Luke is a valuable helper in controlling cash smuggling,” customs spokesman Michael Walk said. “Considering his successful debut, we are excited to what his rate of success will be in the future.”

German laws prohibit bringing €10,000 or more in cash into the country, with visitors from outside the Europeab Union required to submit a written statement and travelers from within the bloc to declare the money verbally when questioned by the officials.

However, Luke’s nose sometimes works a bit too well — several times he discovered wads of money under €10,000 in value.

He is trained to sniff out euros, dollars, and pounds.

“The currencies have distinct scents, based on their paint and paper,” a customs’ representative was quoted as saying by the DPA news agency.

Luke and other sniffer dogs are a part of German authorities’ effort to curb illegal money transfers involving actors like drug traffickers or terror networks.
